The NanoCruising Theme Song

NanoCruising has always been a bit informal, a bit experimental, and very much driven by curiosity. So it felt only fitting that the podcast finally got a theme song — one that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

With episode 50, I’ve started using a NanoCruising theme song with playful lyrics that celebrate small boats, simple adventures, and the spirit of doing more with less. It was created as a bit of an experiment, using modern tools in the same exploratory spirit that drives dinghy cruising itself.

This post exists mostly for posterity — a place to keep the song and its lyrics, and to mark this small moment in the life of the podcast.

🎶 The Song

🎧 NanoCruising Theme Song

✍️ Lyrics

Verse 1

No winches humming, no engine roar

Just a little boat and an open shore

Canvas snapping, the kettle’s on

World feels big when the boat feels small

Pre-Chorus

We don’t need much, just wind and tide

A chart, a compass, and time to ride

Chorus

NanoCruising — small boats, big seas

Launch at dawn, go where you please

Trailer down, mast goes up

Freedom fits in a coffee cup

NanoCruising — cast off the rules

Adventure lives in the smallest hulls

Verse 2

Beach for a harbor, stars for a roof

Salt on the deck and stories for proof

From quiet creeks to a weathered bay

If it floats, we’re on our way

Pre-Chorus

No marina lights, no golden gate

Just the pull of wind and the call to wait

Chorus

NanoCruising — small boats, big seas

Oars and sails and blistered knees

Simple gear, honest miles

Every knot earned, every smile

NanoCruising — no place to hide

Just you, the boat, and the turning tide

Bridge

Keel or dagger, lug or gaff

Plans go wrong and we laugh

If you can tow it, if you can row

There’s a long way left to go

Final Chorus

NanoCruising — small boats, big seas

Real adventure, no guarantees

If you’ve dreamed it, if you dare

There’s a ramp somewhere out there

NanoCruising — come along

Pull the trailer, sing the song

Outro

Small boat.

Big water.

NanoCruising.

Like the podcast, the song isn’t meant to be polished or grand. It’s meant to be fun. A nod to tinkering, small boats, curious routes, and the joy of heading out under sail — even if the boat is tiny and the plan is loose.

If nothing else, I hope it makes you smile when it comes on.

Designing for Adventure: Michael Storer’s Path to Small Boat Innovation

A Passion for Small Boats and Smart Design Michael Storer has made a name for himself in the world of small boat design. His creations, such as the Oz Goose and Oz Racer, have gained a strong following among DIY boatbuilders and NanoCruisers. But how did he get started? In the latest episode of the NanoCruising podcast, we dive into Michael’s journey—his early sailing experiences, how he developed his design philosophy, and the first boat he ever designed. Learning from the Best at DuckFlat Wooden Boats (Australia)  One of the most fascinating parts of Michael’s story is how he learned boat design—not through formal training, but by working as a technical consultant for DuckFlat Wooden Boats (Australia) , where he had access to hundreds of different designs. This hands-on exposure gave him a deep understanding of what works and what doesn’t when it comes to small, efficient boats. Michael’s background in engineering and problem-solving helped him refine his approach, leading t...

⛵ John Welsford on New Designs, Ocean Dreams, and the Future of Small Boats 🌊

If you enjoyed Part 1 of our conversation with legendary boat designer John Welsford , you’re going to love what’s in store for Part 2. In this episode, John takes us further into his world of small boat innovation and adventure. We kick things off with a look at the new 7-meter ocean-going boat he’s currently designing—something he hasn’t talked much about publicly until now. It’s a boat meant to cross oceans with confidence, while still staying true to Welsford’s core design philosophy: safety, practicality, simplicity, and real-world performance. From there, we dig into the story behind his new design “Scallywag,” which was born out of a desire for a microcruiser like the SCAMP—but with accommodations for longer journeys and sleep-aboard comfort. It’s a design many have been waiting for, and it reflects the continued evolution of small cruising sailboats. John also shares some fantastic anecdotes about his designs out in the wild. We hear about a SCAMP in Tierra del Fuego , and...
